Our Story

Where It All Began

Founded on June 18, 1986 by Dr. G. Van Standifer and G. Gilbert Whaley Jr. in Glenarden, Maryland, the AMB Glenarden Chapter is the original home of Midnight Basketball — a revolutionary idea that keeping at-risk youth engaged late at night with basketball and life skills would reduce crime and transform communities.

Serving Prince George's County for nearly four decades, Glenarden remains the heart of the AMB national network, setting the standard for community-based youth programming across the country.
